INTRODUCTION
The Mayor of Chicago Heights along with the University of Chicago, has developed a project called Community Gardening. The purpose of the Community Gardens are to provide work for the students and food for the members of the community. The Mayor is asking schools to adopt a garden. They are looking for students to plan, plant and work a community garden. Your responsibility is to identify the plot of land your school will be gardening, select the plants, outline the garden and present your plan in a model, that will be selected from the other designs.
TASKS
As a class we will visit the various sites available for gardening, evaluate each site, and pick one site. Once a site is picked you will form work groups of no more than 10 students per group, and you will than begin your research. You are to determine the area of acreage to be gardened, select appropriate plants for the garden, determine the growing cycle of the plants in the garden, and create a model of your proposed garden.
BACKGROUND
While prior gardening experience is not necessary it is important that you familiarize yourself with the many aspects of gardening. Each student should be able to properly take linear measurements, read a ruler, use mapping/graphing skills, and work as a member of a team. Here are several web sites to help you in your research.
PROCESS
You are first required to form your work teams. The work teams may not be more than 10 students, but not less than 5. Once the community garden site has be selected the team is required to develop a model of your proposed garden as a finished project. The process should include the steps listed as well as another processes your team deems important and necessary in order to complete the assigned task.
