The purpose of the Reading Resource Program is to help students improve their reading skills. We work with small groups of students as a supplement to their classroom Reading and/or Content Area curriculums. We provide lessons and activities that focus on vocabulary, decoding, and comprehension. Small groups allow us to individualize instruction, analyze needs, and assess progress.
Students are selected for this program initially by scoring at least a year below grade level on the Terra Nova and/or in the Warning, or Below categories on the ISAT test. Teacher recommendation is also considered. At the beginning of each school year, students new to the District are evaluated with an Individualized Reading Inventory, and may be included in the Program. Parents are notified of their child's selection to be included, and may decide whether or not their child will participate. Additions to, or deletions from the Program may occur at any time during the school year. These changes may be due to the enrollment of other new students, staff requests, or changes in test scores. Additions to any Reading Resource group is also subject to current group sizes.
The students will receive Reading Resource services either in their classrooms or in the Reading Resource room (as determined by the classroom and Reading Resource teacher). The 4th and 5th grade teachers will collaborate with me to set up a schedule for student sessions. Each class group will receive 90 minutes of time per week: 30 minutes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, or 45 minutes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The schedule is subject to change due to teacher request, SIP days, or whole school activities. I also have times available for cooperative planning, and for extra class, small group, and individual student sessions.
