NFSI
IV Mars Millennium Mars Millennium teachers are
exploring Mars in education projects sponsored through
the Adler
Planetarium & Astronomy Museum.
Plans are underway to develop a permanent community on
Mars. The goal is to have the community established by
the year 2030. Students of Shelly
Peretz, Kathy
Kreidler, Sylvia
Tufts, Kim
McNamara, Gary
Fryrear, and Rob
Bell participated in the project.
Thornridge students conducted a survey
to determine how the public feels about building a
community on Mars.
Once the survey data was analyzed, the final product
was the creation of a brochure,
newspaper article, poem, skit,
pamphlet or PowerPoint
presentation.
Next, students participated in an Energy Summit. They
used visual aids to present.
Students had to decide, by consensus, which energy source
is most suitable for use on Mars. Students then wrote
"letters" to NASA justifying
their choice.
Science students were also asked to develop a
comic strip to demonstrate what
they knew about Mars. The best of the comic strips were
also entered in the Amazing
Kids! comic strip contest and will also be on display
at the Amazing
Artists! Gallery site.

Social studies students developed a Mars Constitution
and math students investigated the tools and techniques
used by NASA aeronautical engineers.
Students performed library and internet research in
the Thornridge
Media Center, beginning with links
posted on the Media services site.
