Money

The money system is the form of discipline that we use in both the fourth and fifth grades.  The purpose of the money system is to emphasize the positive behavior of the students as much as possible.  Students are encouraged to earn as much extra money as possible, but are also expected to keep track of any fines they accumulate throughout the month.

Rent

  •       Each student rents a space in the classroom from the teacher.  This is the spot in the room where their desk is located.
  • They are required to pay the teacher $ 900.00 a month for that rental space.
  • Each student receives a base pay of $ 200.00 per week for attending school (all holidays are paid).     If you notice the students need to earn extra money each month in  order to make their rent payment (the extra pay will be discussed later).
  • If the student cannot make their rent payment then the space that their desk is located on will go up for auction (the details of the auction will be discussed further).  If a student does lose their desk space, they will still pay their rent to the teacher, however the student who purchases the space during auction will receive and extra $900.00 per month. (this is a way for the students to "invest" their money in some classroom real-estate).
  • Although another student may own the property that another student's desk is located on, all rent prices and rules remain the same.
  • The students have the option to purchase their own desk space for a price of $ 3, 600.00.  After the student has paid this amount they no longer have to pay rent.  (I know that sounds very difficult, but it is very attainable as long as the students learn to manage their money).
  • Failure to pay rent at the end of the month will cause students to miss special activities (ex. extra recess).  They will also be required to make any back payments on debts they owe.

Fines

  • These are based on the classroom rules that the students come up with at the beginning of the year.
  • The fine amounts are discussed and decided on by the students.  The only stipulation that I have is that there are no fines under $ 50.00.
  • The fines are kept track of by a packet patrol student who is chosen based on behavior from the previous month.  If a student does not receive a fine in the previous month they then qualify to be chosen, at random, as a packet patrol
  • All students however are highly encouraged to keep track of their own fines and total amount of money.  I will have random money checks to make sure the students have the correct amounts of money.

Earning More Money!

  • Every student has the opportunity to earn extra money every month.
  • The easiest and most profitable way to earn money is by having all homework turned in on time for the week.
  • If a student has turned in all of their homework for the week they can earn an extra $ 100.00 per week.
  • Another possibility is to go above and beyond the everyday responsibilities of a student at McAuliffe School.  An example of this would be if a student took it upon themselves to help someone who needed extra help on homework, went out of their way to be nice to a new student, or by being awarded Student of the Week
  • The amount of payment is usually decided on by the individual teacher.  These are just a couple of ways to go above and beyond, the possibilities are endless.
  • If a student is chosen to be a packet patrol they earn an extra $ 200.00 a month for successfully completing their job.
  • Students can also earn extra money during auction or by investing their money in class real-estate.

Auction

The auction occurs on the last Friday of the month.  It provides an opportunity for students to earn extra money before they have to pay rent.  The requirements are as follows:

        * students can auction 4 pieces of property.  (all of these pieces will be grouped together in one package)

        * the sums of these goods may not exceed a real money price of $4.00.  (this is to prevent students from auctioning anything of great value).

I find that this system allows for student to participate equally and fairly in the auction.  All specific rules related to the auction will be created in class with help from the students.
