There are many interesting topics discussed throughout the year. Here is a quick overview of just a few, with some helpful links (hint, hint).
Native Americans - students will be asked to complete a research project at the beginning of the school year on an assigned tribe. This is a project that will help introduce the students back to school and learn how to research a subject online. Click here to see the lesson plan for the first project of the year!
North American Exploration - This section will discuss many of the early explorers of North America including Christopher Columbus, and Hernando Cortes. We will also discuss the rise and fall of the Maya and Aztec civilizations. This will gradually lead into the European migration to North America (colonial times).
American Revolution - This is along with A New Nation is where we spend the majority of our time throughout the school year. We will participate in numerous research and Internet projects during these two portions of the year.
Civil War - This is how we end the year in fifth grade. We never seem to get as far as I would like to with this unit, but hopefully this year we will be able to study the war in more detail.
