  • The APBioWiki is an integral part of this course. It's a place in which we will build a common knowledge base about AP biology. Wikis are persistent, so, it's a way to pass knowledge from one year's offering of the course to the next as well as to interested viewers in the wider world outside the class.
What's a wiki? A wiki is a system for creating hyperlinked documents that are open to being revised by all participants. That might sound chaotic, but it's really a powerful idea for knowledge management. To get an idea of what a wiki is, take a look at Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia with tens of thousands of co-authors.
  • Great Scientific Debates: Using iMovie to Teach History and the Nature of Scientific Inquiry Using iMovie as their primary tool, students supplement hands-on science with their own creative genius to explore how and why we know what we know about the world.

  • Urban Watch Illinois adult volunteers, high school teachers and students will be able to conduct biological inventories of their local open green spaces. Scientists can then use the data to identify long-term changes in urban natural areas. UrbanWatch will provide teachers and students with an opportunity to learn more about urban ecology and enable them to influence wildlife habitats, while helping scientists gather data on urban wildlife statewide.

  • Life Through Time: The Heart of the Phanerozoic Students first study the sequence, history, and meaning of the geological time scale. Each individual or small group is then assigned a segment of geological time about which to produce a three-to five-minute iMovie project. Students use the Internet, books, and other resources to locate information about the time period. The research is used as the basis for the movie's narration. Students need to make sure they properly document all sources.

  • Explore one of the Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues listed on the Human Genome Project Information site and write a position paper reflecting students' views.

  • Respiration Goes Hollywood!

Your job is to dramatize the events that lead to the complete breakdown of glucose into its products CO2 and H2O.

You will need to determine your needs for the cast and crew for this production which might include the producer, director, narrator, costume designer, and of course, your actors. It will be much easier if you assign different actors to the role of each of the carbons in glucose as opposed to making only one actor glucose.  Some actors may play a dual role as ATP and ADP, with modifications.

All movies have a "tagline"
Examples:
"The Cat is Back!" (The Cat in the Hat)
"This holiday, discover your inner elf." (Elf)
"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...." (Star Wars)

You will go on a press junket to promote your production.  Be prepared to answer questions about your co-stars and background about your production (costs, anticipated box office, where it took place....)

    • Genetica's Dilemna

The Mayor of the City of Naturia has called for a city council meeting to decide whether to allow the Acme Seed Company to test and ultimately sell its corn. As a member of one of a special interest group, your job will be to present your views at the council meeting on the big question: Should Acme Seed be allowed to test and sell their corn to Genetica?
